Gladiator Screenshot Analysis - Jack

Image
This shot occurs during the climactic one on one fight between Maximus and Commodus, as a long shot depicts the fallen emperor in the center of the colosseum while a wounded Maximus stands victorious. The lighting and blocking ensures the viewers focus on Maximus and Commodus, with Praetorian guards circling the two to emphasize the result of their battle while the audience is obscured in darkness. The Roman audience, who’s cries have dominated the background noise of the film thus far, fades into obscurity to further emphasize Maximus as an individual, separated from the Roman crowd he’s been forced to entertain throughout the film. Glimmering beams of sunlight can be seen clearly at the top of the frame, contrasting the bleak gray Rome characterized by Commodus’ reign. Now that Commodus has been slain by Maximus, the warm light returns, signifying the hope for a brighter future that's been restored through Commodus’ defeat.
